About This Project

The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, located in Gdańsk, Poland, is a historic landmark for the performing arts, founded in 2008 by Professor Jerzy Limon. This cultural institution is a stage for performances and a vibrant hub that bridges the past, present, and future.

Rooted in the city’s history, the theatre traces its origins back to the 17th-century Fencing School. Recognized as Poland’s first public theatre, it has captivated younger audiences through performances of Shakespeare’s plays.

Construction began in 2009, transforming the theatre into a masterpiece of modern architecture. Its main hall, featuring a retractable roof and a magnificent crown, offers an extraordinary space for theatrical performances enhanced by natural light.

The grand opening in September 2014 marked a new era for Gdańsk’s cultural and artistic landscape. Under Professor Jerzy Limon’s leadership, the theatre embarked on a new artistic journey, and in September 2021, Agata Grenda was appointed as the director of this cultural heritage.

The theatre’s performances serve as a manifesto of its commitment to preserving tradition while embracing innovation. Through high-quality productions, specialized theatre education programs, and fostering collaboration with diverse communities, the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre offers a multifaceted approach.
